Nourish-UNC’s long standing venture, Hunger Lunch, has been a well-known affordable and delicious lunch option on campus since 2003. In the past, we have partnered with TROSA (Triangle Residential Options for Substance Abusers) to provide students and faculty a hot lunch consisting of rice, beans and cornbread for $4 every Wednesday in the pit.
As an organization, we strive to maintain sustainable, mutually-beneficial partnerships both locally and abroad. Our partnership with TROSA was a great example: TROSA was ensured a guaranteed income each week to support their unique two-year program for recovering drug and alcohol addicts. In addition, the income that Nourish-UNC gained from Hunger Lunch went towards community-based international development projects. In the fall of 2015 the partnership was no longer profitable for TROSA so the relationship ended in the capacity of Hunger Lunch, but we still collaborate through another venture, Pit Thrift.
Now we are excited to announce that starting this Wednesday, March 2nd, Nourish-UNC and Hunger Lunch are kicking off a new partnership with the beloved Vimala’s Curryblossom Cafe located close by on Franklin Street. Vimala’s Cafe is a well-known Indian restaurant in Chapel Hill that serves a wide array of delicious foods from Tandoori Chicken to Cholé to Pakoras. In addition to their reputation for high quality food, Vimala, the owner, is a highly respected member of our community. Committed to serving food to everyone, regardless of their financial capabilities, Vimala’s has a sign on their door that reads: “If you cannot afford your meal, let us know. We believe that healthy, delicious food is a human right.” We are excited and honored to begin this new partnership with a business that is social justice-minded.
So, what can you expect from Hunger Lunch 2.0?
Cholé (chickpea curry) + Basmati Rice + Naan for $5.50 every Wednesday in the Pit.
We accept cards or cash and will be accepting any meal plans our dedicated customers have left over from last semester!
